Meta Tags for Search Engine Optimization

What are meta tags?
Meta tags are HTML codes that are inserted into the header on a web page, after the title tag. They take a variety of forms and serve a variety of purposes, but in the context of Search Engine Optimization when people refer to meta tags, they are usually referring to the meta description tag and the meta keywords tag.
Page Titles are very important for Search engines. The titles in the browser are displayed in the title bar. The search engines would look at the this title bar to determine what the page is all about.

The Title Tag :
Title Tag is the most important part of a Web page to optimize. The Meta title characters are best when its about 65 characters (meta title tag recommended characters length) including white spaces and are keyword rich. Use a unique title on each page of your website and make it describe what will be found on that page.
  • Title tag 10 - 60 characters, no special characters.
  • The title should bot be any longer than 60 characters. ( scrubtheweb.com )
  • The title should not begin with the domain name. It is often considered as spam.
  • The domain name shouldn't be repeated in the title. It is often considered as spam.
  • Don’t use stop words such as “the”, “a”, “as”, “of”

The Description Tag :
This tag is used to describe what your page is about. The text of your description tag is often used by search engines to display a short summary of your page in their search results pages. If there is no text in the description tag, most search engines will pull the first few lines of text from your web page content and display it on the results pages. Shows theme - less than 200 chars. Google no longer "relies" upon this tag, but will often use it.
  • Shouldn't be any longer than 25-30 words ( DMOZ ).
  • Shouldn't be any longer than 100 characters ( Google ).
  • Shouldn't be any longer than 150 characters ( scrubtheweb.com ).
  • Shouldn't be any longer than 200 characters ( searchenginewatch.com referring to Google).
The Keywords Tag :
This tag is used by some search engines to help categorize your site. The keywords are the search terms that people use to locate your site. Each keyword and keyword phrase should be separated with commas. The keywords meta tag is usually placed after the title and meta description tags in HTML document. Most search engines limit the total size of keywords to about 250 characters.

Keywords - Body:
Keyword density in body text : 5 - 20% - (all keywords/ total words) Some report topic sensitivity - the keyword spamming threshold % varies with the topic. Individual keyword density : 1 - 6% - (each keyword/ total words)

The Robots Tag :
By default, the search engines will index a page if they find it, and then follow all the links on the page to look for other pages to index. You could use the robots tag to tell search engines not to add the page to their indexes.
